I know the bank policy is the focus of the story here but what about the vending sales person? Couldn’t they take them to court? It sounds like Beck cashed the check and never delivered anything.

I had an earthlink account about 7 years ago, then tried to cancel it over the phone. I couldn’t get through to anyone to cancel the account, and I had to leave to move overseas. I put a stop payment to them with my bank, but didn’t know it would only last six months. I have just discovered they have been billing me for over five years after I stopped payment to them; they picked up where they left off; and I havn’t used their service at all, all this time.
I realize I should have caught it earlier. Now I have cancelled the account of course (having spent at least an hour on the phone with them on hold, etc.), and they still want 89.00 from me for the last 3 months, which Wells Fargo ( my bank) wouldn’t give them. They’ll have to hold me at gunpoint to get that.
Needless to say, I don’t recommend Earthlink.
